The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. It builds a massive, tax-free corpus over your working years through combined contributions from you and your employer, plus compound interest from the government.
How Does the EPF Contribution Work?
Every month, a fixed percentage of your Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (DA) is diverted to your EPF account. Here is the exact breakdown of how your money is divided:
Employee's Share
You contribute exactly 12% of your Basic Salary + DA every month. This entire amount goes directly into your EPF account and earns compounding interest.
Employer's Share
Your employer also contributes 12%, but it is split: 3.67% goes to your EPF account, and the remaining 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) to fund your monthly pension after age 58.
Top Benefits of EPF
EEE Tax Benefit
Like PPF, EPF falls under the Exempt-Exempt-Exempt category. Your contributions (up to ₹1.5L under 80C), the interest earned, and the final maturity amount are all 100% tax-free.
High Interest Rates
The EPF interest rate (historically ranging from 8.1% to 8.5%) is declared every year by the EPFO and is generally much higher than standard Fixed Deposits.
Emergency Withdrawals
You can take partial advances from your EPF balance for critical life events like marriage, medical emergencies, or buying a house.
